WalMart Kung Fu Grip Air Adventurer

In August, 2007, WalMart introduced five reproductions of the original Kung Fu Grip Adventure Team members. This is the Air Adventurer. Here we see the old-style box, not seen on store shelves since the 1970s.

The ad for the five is in magazines.

This is a nicely coordinated resurgence of the Adventure Team with Kung Fu Grip. The Club Exclusive figures are accurate reproductions of the pre-KFG Joes with the "nosepicker" hands. The WalMart Joes are less accurate in many respects, but the look and feel are well re-created. One thing I'm not overly fond of is the head sculpt, which uses the 40th Anniversary head which is molded from grayer plastic, and is not as wide in the face.

The Figure

The box comes with a plastic form insert in which Joe is wired firmly. Tucked next to his feet is a club brochure. As a theft-prevention method, this seems silly since the whole insert slips out easily.

The figure inside is a nice version of the Air Adventurer complete with wonderful orange jumpsuit and a gray Lebel pistol. The original KFG figures didn't come with shoulder-holster and pistol, but a rifle.

There is some dissatisfaction from fans because the original Adventure Team with Kung Fu Grip did not come with the shoulder-holster and pistol, but a rifle and strap. The original "nosepicker" AT Joes did come with the shoulder-holster and pistol, however. Personally, I think that most people remember the shoulder holsters and would think that the figures wouldn't feel like Adventure Team without the shoulder-holster and pistol. I also think that tossing in the rifle would have been a great move.

One interesting thing for collectors: The Air Adventurer seems to have shipped many copies with no AT tag on the uniform. While many collectors will clamber to grab these up for their rarity, they aren't rare. It seems to me (from talking to fellow collectors) there was about a 50/50 chance of getting the AT insignia on the chest of the uniform.

This is the Lebel revolver that shipped with the Air Adventurer.

Front Face
Side

The hair flocking is quite good on this version of the Air Adventurer. It's a more monotone blonde than the original Air Adventurer which had some flecking of darker color in it to make it a more robust blonde color. The GI Joe Collectors' Club does a good job getting the hair color right on their Air Adventurer. Although they, too, got it wrong on the first try. They made right by sending all purchasers another version of the flocked head that was more accurate. I appreciate their effort, but I wasn't that worried about the color difference. Hey, I guess for those of us who purchased the Club's version, two heads really are better than one.

The figure comes with a nicely accurate reproduction of the plastic Adventure Team dog-tag.

Club Brochure

This entire line of 5 figures comes with a GI Joe Collectors' Club brochure inviting people to join up. This glossy two-sided brochure is nicely done, and is tucked away down by the feet of the figure.

Inside it refers to the various things you get with club membership, not limited to the Adventure Team.

Assessment

I find this a great reproduction. The headsculpt, the hair, the eye paint, everything is quite nice. I can't vouch for accuracy compared to the original because I don't have one to compare it to. It does, however, look great, and recreates the feel of the original AT figure well. 9/10
