I call on one of the funniest scenes in any film. In This Is Spinal Tap, Christopher Guest is showing Rob Reiner his special amplifier. All the dials go to 11. Thanks to Christopher Guest and Spinal Tap, the phrase "this one goes to 11" has come into general usage - it can mean anything that exceeds expectations, but generally it means anything you give extra effort to for zero effect - or a waste of effort. Ugh... This alien looks so stiff in this shot... Again we see the trigger-fingered hand I swapped out. The color match wasn't perfect because 21st Century Figures are slighly grayer in color, but in this light, you can't see the problem.

The roar is from the film. The Iron Giant does roar on occasion. Another blur effect is used here for the Giant's final transformation. This is the 22" version of the Iron Giant. This deluxe model was sold at Warner Brothers stores for about $50.00. I found this one for $22.00 on their online store as they were clearing the Iron Giant stuff. I ordered two - one for me and one for Sean Dickinson. This one featured the ability to "swallow" scrap metal. Its head bobs up and down when it speaks. It is also a room alarm, and its eyes light up in two colors. The roar is from the film. The Iron Giant does roar on occasion. I Rock is used here as a reference to one of the first words the Giant learns in the film. Clearly the aliens are now overpowered by this giant. There was no need to cheat the size of the aliens in this shot. The 12" aliens did get dwarfed by the huge Giant toy. The intensity of the Giant's anger at this point can be seen by the intensity of the beams coming from his brilliant red eyes. The walls I had for the hallways weren't tall enough to depict the height required to make room for the Giant in its largest form.

The Giant's head tilts up, making his mouth open, as he talks electronically. These are smaller toy aliens I substituted in to show the sheer size of the Giant. At this point I substitute smaller Aliens toys. These were about 6" in height, but oddly enough, they were molded in the same position and proportion as the two Aliens that came from the 12" toy sets. The transition is seamless here, and helps show how large the Giant has gotten.

These are parts from the disassembled Queen Alien toy. I had them protrude from the Giant's mouth to show he is eating the aliens piece by piece. Here, the aliens are clearly trying just to get away with their lives. Here, the aliens are clearly trying just to get away with their lives.

Only a few parts remain of the alien menace. These were taken from the disassembled Queen Alien I took apart for this shoot. This Iron Giant has great articulation, including the fingers which are individually hinged. This Iron Giant has great articulation, including the fingers which are individually hinged.

Here, I kind of wished I had a spare Alien head I could have had protruding from the Giant's mouth, but I didn't want to dismantle more alien toys, and the Queen's head was a bit too large. Note that the eyes are now turning less red as the Giant seems to have the situation in hand... or mouth. Previous Page | Next Page Sconces are made of plastic easter-eggs, the rounded half, cut in half, painted silver inside, green outside. The silver is meant to diffuse light upward. GENETRIX - just a random name to imply genetic research. Though the picture doesn't show it, the X is a double helix of atomic spheres. Light flare looks like something from Photoshop or Lightwave, but is actually how it appeared. Behind the sconce is a TapLight light. The moulding is plastic wall moulding painted semi-matte black. Details on its construction can be found on the "Behind the Scenes" page. Click here to see how it was constructed. This is a model of the Pulse Rifle from the movie Aliens. It was part of a "Hicks vs. Aliens" 12" figure set produced by Kenner around 1997. This is a Classic Collection GI Joe with the head of Corporal Hicks, wearing the Marine outfit that came with the "Hicks vs. Aliens" toy set. Click here to see a larger picture of the set in its box. Alert over, the Giant's eyes turn back to green. Alert over, the Giant's eyes turn back to green. Here, the burp is added by simply air-brushing some green in over the photo, almost entirely transparent.
