Why is this so hard? There are FORTY SQUARES!
July 29, 2012

This "puzzle" has been making its rounds on facebook way too frequently with people answering 25, 29, 27, etc... Why is this hard?

It's simple. Start with the smallest squares (1/2 grid by 1/2 grid) and count those. Then go 1x1 and count those. Then go 2x2 and count those. Then 3x3 and finally 4x4 (the outline.)

1) There are 8 smallest squares:

2) There are 18 1x1 squares:

3) There are 9 2x2 squares:

4) There are 4 3x3 squares:

5) Finally, there is 1 4x4 square:

So let's add, shall we?

8 + 18 + 9 + 4 + 1 = 40

Let's Get 2012 Started - Late
April 1, 2012 – April Fools!

What with the old computer that was hacked together from parts soundling like a jet taking off, and me getting hit with a nasty Trojan in December, I went and bought myself a new computer in March. It's a Gateway with an i5 processor (Quad Core) and 1Tb hard drive and 8Gb RAM. I think it'll do for now. :-)

So with this comes the arduous task of migrating my activities over to a new machine, a task I generally hate. And this is no exception.

Dreamweaver, which worked on my Win XP machines, is not working with my Win 7 machine, so I had to look elsewhere for an integrated web site editor. I found that Firefox has Web Developer tools, and I swear I was editing a page this morning. When I finally got it connecting to FTP using FireFTP I somehow could no longer edit web pages. No idea why.

But for now I'm using Open Office which can edit HTML files, so I guess I'm good. It means using two programs – one to edit and one to upload/download, but I think I can live with that for now. I'm going to work on getting the integration down through Firefox so I can edit there, and upload straight from there, including new included file references, like graphics, etc. But for now I can work this way.

Other programs like Photoshop and Corel which were reliable on my old machines I can no longer access due to not having install disks...

So here I am. Back on the web for 2012. Even if in a haphazard way.
