GI Joe

Rescue the Pygmy Gorilla

This set includes a Classic Collection Muscle Body GI Joe figure with flocked hair in the form of a full beard, as opposed to the goatee beard of the previous Adventure Joes, camouflage pants, black boots, austrailian style hat, machete with scabbard, binoculars, .45 automatic pistol with chest holster, tranquilizer gun with ammo, dog tags, and pygmy gorilla.

The remarkable thing about this figure is that he features a full-bearded flock, which is the first variation on the flocking since the Adventures Of series was introduced, much to the delight of collectors. Years later, that sculpt is still desired among collectors and since this is the only set it came with, making it rather rare.

This set revises the Capture of the Pygmy Gorilla (#7437), which included a pontoon boat, with motor, a movie camera, storage box, net, gun, and pygmy gorilla. So you can see the scope of the older AT sets were somewhat larger, often including a vehicle. So far only the Hawk River modern set includes a small boat.

The Adventures Of GI Joe Rescue the Pygmy Gorilla uses the new "Adventures of GI Joe" tag near the title of the set, and not in the logo, as seen in Trouble at Coyote Crossing, showing its move away from the "Adventures Of" line. This is the last boxed AO figure in the line.

Hasbro's next "Adventures Of" type Joe is, thankfully, an Adventure Team Joe, The Secret of the Mummy's Tomb, and many AT fans rejoiced loudly. I bought four of those figures, one for each head sculpt!
